Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center First In Northeast Ohio To Offer Rotator Cuff-Sparing Shoulder Replacement

Dr. Salvatore Frangiamore, a fellowship-trained shoulder and sports medicine surgeon at Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center, has become the first surgeon in Northeast Ohio to perform rotator cuff-sparing shoulder replacement surgery. On Oct. 1, Dr. Frangiamore successfully completed his first two procedures, bringing an innovative surgical option to patients in the region. He is among a small number of surgeons nationwide performing this technique.

Unlike traditional shoulder replacement surgery, which typically requires cutting and repairing part of the rotator cuff to access the shoulder joint, the rotator cuff-sparing approach allows the surgeon to replace the damaged joint while preserving the rotator cuff tendons. By avoiding disruption of these important structures, the technique may reduce the need for certain postoperative restrictions and allow patients to begin rehabilitation sooner.

“By allowing patients to start rehabilitation much earlier, this technique bypasses common recovery hurdles tied to rotator cuff healing,” said Dr. Frangiamore. “For appropriate candidates, this approach speeds up early recovery and gets people back to their daily lives significantly faster than traditional shoulder replacement.”

Shoulder replacement surgery is commonly performed to address severe joint damage caused by arthritis and other conditions, particularly when nonsurgical treatments no longer provide adequate relief. During the procedure, damaged portions of the shoulder joint are replaced with artificial components to help reduce pain and improve mobility. The rotator cuff-sparing technique offers an alternative surgical approach for appropriately selected patients, with the potential to simplify rehabilitation while maintaining the benefits of shoulder replacement.

Through the introduction of rotator cuff-sparing shoulder replacement, Dr. Frangiamore and Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center continue to expand treatment options and improve the recovery experience for patients throughout Northeast Ohio.
