Innovative Treatment Options for Knee Conditions

Crystal Clinic is proud to be on the cutting-edge of the latest surgical and nonsurgical approaches. Whether our surgeons have developed a new procedure themselves or embraced the newest advancements in technology and treatments, you can always expect to receive state-of-the-art care for your condition.

Invented by Lars Petersen in Sweden in 1987, MACI is the newest cartilage preservation approach. We take two, tic tac-sized pieces of your non-weight-bearing articular cartilage via arthroscopy and then send those cells to a company called Vericel. After six weeks, Vericel returns the cells on a matrix or scaffold, which is now full of millions of your own healthy cartilage cells. Then your surgeon performs a second operation where this cell-rich matrix is placed into the bad area with the defect.

Total Joint Replacement

The knee is usually replaced with a combination of cobalt chrome and highly cross-linked polyethylene implants, which have helped to improve success rates. Modular components are now used in knee replacements, allowing for easy "revision" of worn out joints.

In total knee replacement surgery, the damaged ends of the bones that meet at the knee and underside of the kneecap are replaced with an implant. Most knee replacements are cemented into place.

Modern joint replacements have a well-established record for longevity and durability. However, they need to be closely followed for signs of wear and loosening.

New prosthetic components and surgical techniques enable safe and effective correction of potential problems before they get out of hand. We recommend patients come in for a yearly check-up and X-ray so your new joint can be monitored.

A new knee will reduce the amount of pain you’ve experienced. It will also increase your range of motion, allowing you to return to most of your daily activities.

Custom Knee Replacement

In addition to the typical “off-the-shelf” knee replacements, Crystal Clinic’s orthopedic surgeons work with manufacturers who can create a custom-made knee replacement implant based on your specific anatomy. Clinical research has shown that customized implants can provide a better fit, which can result in less post-surgical pain, a more natural feel, increased stability and faster recovery.

Robotic Knee Replacement

Crystal Clinic Orthopedic Center is one of the first hospitals in Northeast Ohio to offer robotic-arm assisted partial and total knee replacements. This highly advanced robotic technology adds to our ability to successfully replace knee joints and enables our surgeons to have an additional tool for the difficult knee joint problems requiring more predictable accuracy.

The robotic knee replacement is a treatment option similar to existing knee replacement techniques already employed by Crystal Clinic joint replacement surgeons. The robotic system is designed to assist surgeons faced with replacing more severely damaged knee joints caused by joint degeneration due to osteoarthritis.
